How it all started...
In 2019, my boyfriend decided that for the holidays I wasn’t allowed to purchase him a gift. “Ohhh,” I thought—so I can’t buy something, but I can make something.
I had never worked with wood before, but I knew he needed a coffee table. I reached out to one of his close friends, someone I knew worked with wood, and asked if he could help me source some slabs. He joined two sister slabs for me and handed them over.
What followed were weeks of sanding—and in that time, I learned more than I ever expected about wood grain, how it responds to different grits, and how it changes with each tool and pass. Somewhere along the way, that slab stopped feeling like just material and started feeling like something personal. Like it had become part of the story.
Even though the wood was already beautiful, it still felt like something was missing. It was personal to me, but I wanted it to be deeply personal to him as well.
Then it hit me: I would have each of his family members write a note to him on a notecard, then trace and burn their handwriting into the underside of the table. At the time, I had no idea exactly how I was going to do it—but I knew I would figure it out.
I collected the notecards, worked through the process, and brought the idea to life.
In the end, he received a coffee table that wasn’t just handmade—it carried the handwriting, memories, and presence of the people closest to him.
And that’s how wood burning began for me.
